In the 5th century, as the Roman Empire collapsed under the pressure of invasions, Christian worship is thought to have stirred the anger of Rome’s ancient gods, speeding up its downfall. Amid this atmosphere of uncertainty and accusation, Augustine of Hippo embarks on an intellectual and inner journey through memory and history, seeking a truth that might illuminate the fate of Rome. But time is running out, not only for the Empire itself, but also for the Christians who find themselves increasingly at odds with the world around them.
Haunted by accusations and by the suffering of his people, he takes on the responsibility of confronting a society in crisis, addressing a central question: who, or what, is truly responsible for the collapse of the glorious Roman Empire?
